Northern Virginia ranks second in the nation in federal contracting and the dollars it receives in procurement, if it was a state anyway.
A five-year study of regional impacts in the federal contracting industry conducted by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission shows Northern Virginia would outrank all but California if the region qualified as a state, based on the amount of procurement dollars the region earns in the industry.
Other parts of Virginia collectively would rank seventh in the nation.
