The federal government recognizes that women-owned small businesses (WOSB) are underrepresented in the federal marketplace in many areas and has enacted initiatives and special designations to give these contractors a boost. The government is required to award five percent of its small business activity to WOSBs through either prime or subcontracting efforts.
To achieve this goal, the government may extend preference in contract awards to both women-owned and economically disadvantaged women-owned small businesses (EDWOSB), in the form of either limiting competition or setting aside contract to only to WOSBs
