That’s how some described Rita Crundwell. Crundwell was the city of Dixon, Illinois’ comptroller and treasurer since 1983, and had been working for the municipality since 1970. Dixon placed its trust in the wrong person for over 40 years! In 2013, she was sentenced to 19 years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud charges, amounting to the theft of $54 million in cash. In the years she spent working for the city, which has an annual budget between $6 million and $8 million, Crundwell misappropriated upwards of $5 million!
